Ahhh! Listen to this! I got a call on Saturday from a man with a Middle Eastern or Indian accent (could be something else too, I am not so good at distinguishing accents), who said he was from the US government and that our household had been chosen for an $8,000 grant. I asked why and he had a long explanation about boosting the economy or something. He declared it was just free money from the government. Part of me knew this was a scam and part of me wished it was true! I let him go on. After a few questions about information he already had about me, he got to the point. He said it would be a direct deposit into our bank. He wanted to confirm my banks routing number. He gave me a number and then said "This prooves that we are from the US government. No other institution would have your banks routing number." I argued against that statement and he starting yelling at me! He yelled, "If you don't want the $8,000 that is fine with us! You don't have to have it. We are giving it away, but if you don't want it, etc." I said, "If you want to give me $8,000, then send a check through the mail." He continued to yell at me and I hung up on him. That felt good. And then this morning, a lady called with a similar accent saying the same things about me being chosen to receive $8000 from the US government. I cut to the chase and asked how they wanted to give me the money. She avoided the question at first, but I asked again. She finally said that they would directly deposit it into my bank. So I said, "So you want my checking account number." Then she hung up on me. Ahhh! I have heard about scams on the news and now I have experienced first hand. Luckily I know about these scams and would not go along with it, but I feel bad for the people who don't know any better and think they are getting $8000. Beware of these scammers!

You might want to report those calls to the police.

Yeah that is nuts... I would be a little wigged out! And... I agree with Jessi... your phone company could trace where the calls were coming from and they can be reported. Good for you for sticking to your guns! (Bank routing #'s are the same for every person, at a particular bank, the checking account # would be the only thing different... nice try scamos!)

my solution = let the machine pick up the phone - if the caller is someone you know and love, answer it. If not, they usually hang up. It has been working for me the last few weeks as I am so darn sick of talking to telemarketers and the like.
