Location of Vegetation

We are going from this...

To this...

We are going from spanish moss in Texas, to kudzu in Georgia. The spanish moss gives me the swampy, alligator, back woods feel. Being married to a reptile man, I kind of like that swampy feel. :) I always think of Brazos Bend State Park when I think about spanish moss. I took these pictures on a beautiful evening while visiting the park. Spanish moss has "grown" on me and I will miss it.

But I like kudzu too. It makes everything so green! I researched a little on these plants, and here are a few facts about them, just in case you were wondering:

Spanish Moss

Spanish Moss is actually not a moss. It is an epiphytic plant (air plant) that can make its own food, meaning it grows on another plant, but does not rely on the host for nutrients. It does not have any roots. It absorbs water and nutrients from the air and rainfall. It prefers moist environments but can withstand lond dry periods. In extreme dry spells, the plant becomes dormant until moisture returns.

Kudzu

Kudzu is a high-climbing, fast growing, weed. It is native to Japan and China but also grows well in Southeastern US. It kills trees, over a period of several years, by blocking the sunlight. It quickly covers abandoned houses, barns, and whatever in its path! The flowers which bloom in late summer have a very pleasant fragrance.

You can see spanish moss in southern Georgia, particularly Savannah. In GA you can get the best of both worlds!

Kudzu, here we come! You can get spanish moss at the craft store when you're especially homesick for it! I love experiencing the environments of different areas. From the desert of Utah to the evergreens of the northwest, to the flat wooded areas of the northeast to the incredible humidity and heat of Texas to the warm humidity of George, we have enjoyed it all!
