Tuesady - the best of times, the worst of times

After Kyle and Jordan's last birthday, I decided that we would start a new tradition of doing birthday experiences instead of birthday parties. Tanner's birthday experience of choice was a train ride (on MARTA for those of you familiar with Atlanta :)). Jack was the lucky boy to come with! The plan was to ride into Atlanta, buy an ice cream cone at a hamburger shop, and head back. Tanner was thrilled! Of course I had to capture those happy moments on camera, but as I pulled my camera out and snapped the photos, Tanner said, "Look at that sign mom. It says 'No Cameras on the Train'."

It was such a great birthday experience for all of us! It's a joy to see your kids so excited about something.

Tuesday started good, but ended horribly. Our whole family was at the church so Mike could coach the Young Men's basketball team and I could coach the Young Women's basketball team. My team had just started warming up, running around the gym. Kyle was playing with a balloon on the court and wasn't paying attention to his surroundings. An 18 year old girl, racing another girl, collided with Kyle. It was a terrible collision! Long story short -

he broke his right femur bone (in the thigh)
he had surgery
he now has two rods through his leg
he will be in a wheelchair for a while
then he will use a walker
then crutches

There is one main thing I learned through this experience -

Kyle is the toughest boy on earth

I had a suspicion he was, but now it has been confirmed. Through this whole ordeal, he has shed only a few tears.

*Hey family, and those of you who want to see more, I started a blog for my pictures. After posting over 50 photos of our Christmas holiday, I realized that I probably needed another blog just for photos. You can see them here.

The photos say it all - from Tanner's interest in the train ride to Kyle's misery and pain from his broken leg! That was a roller-coaster ride day as far as emotions go! We are so sorry about Kyle's broken leg and hope he feels better soon!

Poor Kyle! That's rough! I hope he's ok! I remember when I broke my arm. I think I was a lot more traumatized by it and cried a LOT more though! What a brave kid!

Oh my gosh! What an experience... You had quite the day. I broke my leg when I was about Kyle's age... Same thing, cast up to the thigh, surgery, etc. I'm sure he won't forget it!!! Hope all goes well as he recovers.

There is no doubt Kyle is the toughest kid around. And Tanner is one of the cutest.

Oh no! Poor Kyle! How about you—how are you doing? It's got to be hard on you, too!? Hang in there!

Oh Man. Poor Kyle. He sure is brave. When I started telling Aaron what had happened, all he heard was "femur" and he cringed. Good luck with the recovery.

This makes me so sad... Poor guy! The pictures do say it all! I would be freaking out inside if my little boy had to go through all that.
I hope he feels better soon too!

A train ride! What a fun thing for Tanner and his friend!

I can't believe that story! He got to ride on a train? j/k.

I'm so sorry to hear about Kyle. Isn't that like one of the most painful bones you could break? I hope he is doing okay. He is such a stud. And hey, he will probably have some awesome scars to show off! :)

Poor little Kyle! What a brave and sweet boy he is. I feel so bad for him looking at the pictures with the IV and all.

I hadn't looked at your blog for a few days, and a couple girls told me about it at a birthday party today - that's how I first heard what happened. We were talking about how Kyle will be racing around in his wheelchair and doing all kinds of stunts...he probably won't even care that he can't walk for a while!

I feel so bad for you all! Take care.

What an emotional rollercoaster! What a perfect and fun "birthday experience" for Tanner, but what a terrible and miserable broken leg experience for Kyle.

Oh my goodness, Audra!!! I feel so bad for Kyle. What an ordeal! It was probably more traumatic for you. Atleast this will be a birthday Tanner will never forget. A fun ride on the train and his brother broke his leg. I hope he is doing better. Is he still in the hospital?

Oh my gosh!!! Do you realize what kind of impact it takes to break a femur? Thank goodness for blogs, I haven't done mine for a while and lately I haven't even read anyone's but both Kortney and Kami called me to tell me that Kyle had broken his leg only Kami said it was Tanner but either one is awful!! So sorry.. Good luck with the bone mending and all that goes with it. I wanna see the x-rays.

What a huge huge bummer.

My Gabe was in the hospital with a bone infection 2 years ago and I could not BELIEVE how much I loved him for how tough and good he was. Really makes you appreciate them, when they go through something like that!

I love the idea of a blog just for pictures!
