401(k)

Mike and I read in the BYU magazine about doing a family 401(k) plan. You match however much your children save. Isn't that a great idea! It has worked great with our boys. Whenever they want something that I am not willing to pay for, I tell them they can buy it with their own money (that they have done jobs for). They have learned quickly to be wise with their money. For example, Kyle and Jordan learned the hard way that this arcade game is a rip off.

At the Braves game, I didn't want to pay the $5 for cotton candy. After thinking about it, neither did Kyle or Jordan. Jordan decided that he really wanted an ice cream cone from the ice cream truck, but Kyle opted to eat the ice cream we had in the freezer. Both of them talk about how much money they are saving and how much money they will get at the end of the year when Mike and I will match what they have saved. Very cool.

I thought this idea from the BYU magazine was a great one and I had to share it with y'all.

Haha!! That's a great idea....my kids money burns a whole in their pocket. Maybe I will have to talk to hubby about that one!!

We subsidize our kid's purchases by 1/2. It works out really great.

That's what Justin's parents did when he was growing up. It seemed to really work for them. And by college, all of the kids had a decent amount in their savings account. I think it's a great idea.

Great idea! I wish my parents would have done this for me-- I'd have been a lot more motivated to save my money.

Way to go! It is so important to teach children about spending and saving and how much things cost! They will havae a great advantage when they become independent because they will know how to manage their money.

So good to understand money and how it works early. I wish I had started a 401K when I was in my 20's . It was not even talked about then.
