struggling reader

In my me at 30 post, I said I was reading The Count of Monte Cristo. Well, I think it's worth mentioning that I finished it. I'm not mentioning it because it was a really long book and I want a pat on the back, or that I really loved it (I liked the movie better), but I'm mentioning it because maybe I'm getting better from my problem. This year I've read:

1/8 of Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See

1/3 of Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett

about 1 chapter of A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith

1/3 of Mrs. Mike by Benedict Freedman and Nancy Freedman (this one has my name on it, for goodness sakes)

1/8 of Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln by Doris Kearns Goodwin

1 chapter of Cultural Literacy, What Every American Needs to Know by E.D. Hirshe, Jr.

And these are good books (that's what everybody is saying at least)! I can't finish them! What's my problem? I don't know. But maybe The Count of Monte Cristo is my turning point.

Why am I telling you this? It's a shout out to the struggling readers. You aren't the only one! Or maybe I'm saying, "Tell me I'm not the only one!"

I've tried to read Pride and Prejudice about 5 times. I just started again this week and am determined to get through the whole thing. You've inspired me.

Okay, try The Hunger Games. If you only finish part of that, there is something wrong with you!!! So good to catch up with your life.

I think you have to like the books you are reading before you will finish them. I read the Pillars of the Earth. It was a terriable book. Tons of fighting, tons of the s word, and while he said he thought it could be a book that people would read for ages such as Shakespear really it was a glorified Robin Hood book. On top of way to long. The others I haven't read, but find subjects you like is my point.

there are too many great books out there to waste time reading ones that do not engage. that said, i think you need to try 'a tree grows..' again. i'm reading it now and think it is one you would like.

Yeah, I wouldn't worry about it. If the book doesn't capture your interest, why finish it? I think you're smart to go on to something else. We're going to read "These Is My Words" in our bookclub again, because we have new members who have never read it and the ones who have don't come any more. I can't wait!

you bet i'm a struggling reader - as in i only have time to read after the kids are in bed (since i hate having to pick up and put down a book) and by that time it's 8.30 at night and i am exhausted. if i sit still longer than about five minutes, i fall asleep. i hardly get through a fraction of the reading i want to in any given year. you're not alone, girl!

I'm just the opposite-even if I hate it I have to finish reading. I have to say--Mrs. Mike is one of my classic favorite books--I think I have read it 50+ times!

Try reading "The Help" it is a great book and really easy reading.
